11. Eastern Flowering Dogwood

EASTERN FLOWERING DOGWOOD (Cornus florida)

The Eastern Flowering Dogwood, which is featured on the Norfolk County flag, used to be much more common but is currently listed as an Endangered species. Its demise, caused by dogwood anthracnose fungus, highlights the harm that can be done by introduced species. The lack of healthy plants makes life harder for species such as Dogwood Blue butterflies and Dogwood Thyatirid moths that feed solely on it as well as Cecropia caterpillars and other insects which use it as an alternate food source.

Much of the stewardship and restoration work done on Long Point Basin Land Trust properties relates to invasive species control. Invasive species are spread through various methods, but you canhelp by:

• Using boot brush stations at trailheads
• Staying on designated trails and keeping pets on a leash
• Learning how to identify invasive species
• Let us know if you find any notable species on our reserves by using the QR code below and clicking on
‘report biodiversity’.
