New Arboretum Trail Showcases Native Trees and Biodiversity at Spring Arbour Farm Nature Reserve

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk County, ON – June 20, 2025 – The Long Point Basin Land Trust (LPBLT) is pleased to announce the opening of a new self-guided arboretum tour at the Spring Arbour Farm Nature Reserve. This initiative invites visitors to explore and learn about 13 native tree species integral to the Carolinian ecosystem.

The arboretum trail features interpretive signage for each tree species, highlighting their ecological roles and the diverse butterfly and moth species they support. This educational experience aims to deepen public understanding of native flora and its significance to local biodiversity.

“We are thrilled to offer this immersive experience that connects visitors with the rich natural heritage of Norfolk County,” said Wendy Cridland, Executive Director of LPBLT. “The arboretum trail not only educates but also honours the legacy of Ken McMullen and Joan Shirlow, who transformed this land into a thriving nature reserve.”

The development of the arboretum trail was made possible through the generous support of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF). Established in 1990, TD FEF is a national charity that funds environmental projects across Canada, focusing on revitalizing and stewarding public green spaces.

“TD Friends of the Environment Foundation is proud to support the Spring Arbour Farm Arboretum Trail,” said Danielle Quenneville, Regional Manager, Quebec, Ontario South and West, and Eastern Ontario. “This project aligns with our commitment to environmental education and community engagement, helping individuals connect with nature and understand the importance of native species in our ecosystems.”

Spring Arbour Farm Nature Reserve, located at 305 Concession Rd. 7 in Langton, Ontario, encompasses 49 acres of protected land featuring oak savanna, early successional forest, and Carolinian forest habitats. The reserve serves as a vital migratory stopover for numerous bird species, Monarch butterflies, and bats.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the arboretum trail and experience the diverse ecosystems preserved within the reserve. For more information, please visit longpointlandtrust.ca.
