Native Wildflower Pollinator Garden
Welcome to the Long Point Basin Land Trust’s Native Wildflower Pollinator Garden.
This garden was created to demonstrate how native plants can support the incredible diversity of pollinators that live in our region. Bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, and even some birds rely on flowering plants for food, while many plants depend on pollinators to reproduce.
Native plants and pollinators have evolved together over thousands of years. As a result, many pollinator species are specially adapted to feed on certain native flowers, while some plants rely on specific pollinators to move pollen between blooms. These ecological relationships help maintain healthy ecosystems and support biodiversity.
Unfortunately, pollinator populations face growing challenges. Habitat loss, invasive species, pesticide use, and climate change have reduced the availability of the food and shelter that pollinators need to survive.
Native plant gardens can help.
By incorporating native wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees into our landscapes, we can create valuable habitat corridors that provide nectar, pollen, nesting sites, and shelter throughout the growing season. Even small gardens can make a meaningful contribution to local wildlife.
The plants featured in this garden were selected because they are native to our region and provide resources for pollinators at different times of the year. Together, they create a diverse and resilient habitat that supports a wide range of species.
How You Can Help Pollinators
You don’t need a large property to make a difference. Consider:
- Planting native flowers that bloom from spring through fall.
- Reducing or eliminating pesticide use.
- Leaving some natural areas undisturbed for nesting habitat.
- Providing a source of water for pollinators.
- Replacing portions of lawn with native plants.
- Supporting local conservation efforts that protect natural habitats.
Every native plant added to a garden is a step toward a healthier landscape for pollinators and the many other species that depend on them.
